By the way, Red Sox, 3-2, in 12. Sox have won 5 of 6 so far this from the MFYs. It's wonderful. My sister went to the ballgame today. I'll get a report from her tomorrow.
So.
There we are.
Ahem. So I've got some new songs now. Let's see . . . well, I've got some new songs and some old ones, to be honest. I've made a best of Ryan Adams mix for my housemates' girlfriend. And because I really love Ryan Adams' music, so and so forth.
Stuff to hear . . . check out Radio 4's Dance to the Underground. It's a brilliant little track - it's dance-punk, it's funky, it's awesome. Diggin' it. My last post had a quote in the title (as do all my titles, they have quotes from songs I dig) by a band called Love Spit Love. The track is called Am I Wrong. Brand New covers it. It's a great track. I'm also working on a mix CD of all mash-ups and bootlegs. I learned something interesting today, though. Sometimes, you just have to try not doing things. Sometimes, when you try too hard, it just doesn't work out. But if... if you try not to do something, sometimes it ends up better. Does that make sense? Sorry, that sounds stupid, but I've been drinking. I'll be posting some mash-ups tomorrow.
Heyo. Not much to say. I downloaded the Ben Kweller's new album. Ben Kweller was the leader singer/songwriter of Radish, who was supposed to be rock's answer to Hanson. HUGE hype, a massive bidding war over them, and... nothing. Now he makes Texas piano-driven rock. It's -great-. He's my favorite singer-songwriter of his generation. It's just honest. I love it. If you want some tracks, check out his website, but his best is "In Other Words".
Hey, check out this link: Art of the Mix. People post mix CDs on there. It's fucking awesome. I'm already in love with the site.
Covers! Who loves 'em? I know I do. Johnny Cash - Heart of Gold: Obviously a cover of a Neil Young song. I'm not sure what album it's off of, but it's not off the newest one. You know how good Neil Young is? Johnny Cash is just that much better. God rest his soul. Johnny Cash has this voice that's so soulful it's hard not to like him. He's such a fucking badass, it's hard to stand. His cover of Hurt is tremendous, and it's probably better than Trent Reznor's original. NOFX - Champs Elysees: Wellity wellity wellity... this is why I like NOFX. Not many bands will cover a 1920s song in french about the Champs Elysees. It's a really strange song, but if you understand french... Okay, so a few years ago at the Warped Tour on the Montreal date, they opened the show with this song, and proceeded to get booed for the rest of their show - I mean... God bless the frogs. Dead Kennedys - Viva Las Vegas: It's a cover, but they change a few words, like referring to doing coke. Yeah. But it's DK, punk hardcore legends.
Happy stoner's day. Couple of new things today...
What's new today? I guess that I've got no MP3s for download, but instead, a mix CD (not mixed tracks though) of good, older stuff. Put this in order and bring in the love.
1. The Cars - Just What I Needed
2. Johnny Cash - Ring Of Fire
3. America - Sister Golden Hair
4. Bob Dylan - Idiot Wind
5. Neil Young - Ohio
6. Nick Drake - Fly
7. Queen - Under Pressure
8. Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London
9. Meatloaf - Anything For Love
10. Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through the Grapevine
11. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Down On The Corner
12. Aerosmith - Dream On
13. The Bee Gees - Massachusetts
14. Big Star - Thirteen
15. The Velvet Underground - Heroin
Okay. I don't know how to explain this. So, you've probably heard of the "Grey Album" with the Beatles instrumentals and the Jay-Z acapellas. One of the better ones was a mix with the acapella of Jay-Z's first single of his album, entitled "Encore". It's pretty entertaining. Then, another DJ remixed the same Jay-Z acapellas with Metallica's "Black Album", to make the "Black on Black Album" or the "Double Black Album". It's not very good, as the only track I really like is "Unforgiven" of Metallica with Jay-Z's "Moment of Clarity", called "Unforgiven Clarity". THEN... well. Take the ones that haven't been mixed yet. Except... it's a band. Called Beatallica. And they made an EP (7 songs) of it. And it's entertaining - it's not great by any stretch, but its catchy. And it's clever as all hell. The two tracks I actually really enjoy are "A Garage Dayz Night" "Sgt. Hetfield's Motorbreath Pub Band". Look, I'm making this up. These guys actually recorded this shit, and it sounds pretty good. But more than that, it's absolutely better than "St. Anger". Note: you can download all the tracks (15 in total over two albums) on their official website, but you need BitTorrent.
Holy fuck. Ever remember an album you grew up with? One that your family listened to all the time? I did. I downloaded a remix of the Black Eyed Peas "Shut Up" with Was (Not Was)' "Walk the Dinosaur". And fuck. Wow. It brings me back to being a youngin' (I mean, seriously, 4th grade), and that my Dad LOVED this album, "What Up, Dog?" You're going to have to trust me on this. Here's the original song, which is one of my favorites of all time. I fucking love this song - it's cheesy, and its late 80s/early 90s, but it reminds me being in the car with my Dad when I was young and him singing the songs of this at the top his lungs and me laughing and loving it all along. It's a great song. I quote lines from the album even now in e-mails to him. Don Was was the producer for the album (hence the name of the band) and he's one of the best producers out there. It's progressive, and yet it's kitchy. It's R&B, dance, lounge, rock, and it goes seamlessly between the genres. You'll love it, I guarantee. Here's that remix that I was talking about.
What else do I have on tap, so to speak? Another track I've been digging again recently is Sloan's "The Other Man". I'm not going to provide a link to it, because its widely available on the net. I've really enjoyed it for a long time, and I just really enjoy it. It's moody and disturbed, but then you listen to it . . . and you hear what the lead singer is saying . . . and it's so slimy and honest. Which is why it's so good. You know it, I'm sure.
Time to be mushy. I like this song by Joseph Arthur called "Honey and the Moon". I can't explain it, it's one of those singer-songwriter cheesy crappy songs. But... maybe you'll like it too.
I downloaded the Death Cab for Cutie catalog the other day and started listening - man o man. It's hard not to like the sound that they have, since its pleading, its wanting, its honest, and its direct. It's a lot like Something Corporate, and I mean the older album, not the newer one. Note: This should read "Something Corporate's older album is a lot like Death Cab for Cutie. Thank you Derek Burpee.
Yup! So let's see here. Best tracks I've heard in a while (new and old ones, here).
Big Country - In a Big Country
This is an old one. I once heard that if the (God rest his soul) lead singer hadn't killed himself, Big Country would have been another U2 - this track makes you feel it. It's very U2 meets The Cars. It's emotional, it's fun, and it's dancy. It's almost as if Men Without Hats actually made a really good song. Bagpipes in the song are really a great though.
Kyprios - This Is My Hit
Nice and angry but funny and good. It's very self-deprecating and interesting and frankly, I really enjoy it. This white rapper is excellent - and he's a puckhead! Seriously, this guy has skills, and he's not facitious, so I really dig it. It's critical of the rap industry, but it pays respects to those who came before him.
The Von Bondies - C'mon C'mon
Yo. Okay, so the lead singer of the Von Bondies got his ass kicked by Jack White, who used to produce songs of this band. They describe the album as "Swamp-Rock", and after listening to this song about 100 times, you can't help but understand. You want to punch a wall, you want to scream along with them, you want to break a glass. The chorus is so catchy, it's sickening. You wonder why these guys hadn't broken before. It's got a hint of the Cure, which may be why I really like it a lot.
Mark Ronson - I Suck (feat. Rivers Cuomo)
Wow, Rivers. My friend introduced me to this song, and it's catchy. It's got a weird feel to it, like it belongs in a movie soundtrack. But then it's all about... sucking. Yeah. Look, just download it from here. I don't quite know how much space I get on this server, so I'll only put songs on that are tougher to get. This is NOT Weezer, I'll say this much. However, it is really bloody entertaining.
So this is my website. I hope you enjoy it. It's going to try to be a blog, but whatever. Nothing in my own life, just things that I'm interesting in right now.The Streets have a new single out. It's called "Fit But You Know It", and it's about girls who... well... know that they're hot and act like it. It's a pretty catchy track, and it's damn entertaining. I went on a bender today downloading bootlegs and mashups, and I got this AMAZING mixtape by DJ James Hyman, who is a DJ on XFM in the UK. He's got people like 50 Cent, Dizzee Rascal, Sean Paul, and Obie Trice name-dropping him on the mixtape and it's crazy-good. He mixes everything from Franz Ferdinand, to The Beatles, to Wrecks-N-Effects - and well, too. It's just fucking awesome, the mix. Check out boomselection for the MP3s, where you can ALSO get the Streets track. Hell, here are the links for the actual mixtape.
