it came down to choosing a kanye song for #1. it was close - nearly a tie between jesus walks and the new workout plan.
i chose jesus walks because it's got such passion (heh) about christ. it's got such furor - this is kanye doing his old testament god impression - he's challenging, tough, and most of all, impressive. this is an impressive song. and in my opinion, the best of 2004.
you say, 'you don't know'.
ff really hit the scene big with their debut this year. there are at least 7 tracks on the album that could be made into singles, and deservingly so. in fact, 'this fire' might be the best track altogether. the point is this - take me out is an instant classic. it's a pop song that rocks. its a song that hit all on all cylinders, getting through the opening into the main part of the song at an efficient pace and rocks your cock every second of the way.
videos of the tsunami itself.
images of before/after the tsunami.
death toll up over 116k. this is truly horrible, to say the least.
i think these are both great songs. there's no question about it. and i would have felt bad putting them both on the list seperately, so this makes sense: team em up.
3a: i heard this song and thought "yeah it's good". after really listening to it a bunch, it became my favorite track on the album and in my opinion, one of the best of the year. american idiot is going to be an rock standard in 10 years for any listener - this will be one of the tracks people remember. it's got this beautiful hooking drumline, great lyrics, and beats out "when i come around" as my favorite green day song. if you don't have this one yet, get it asap.
3b: a mashup. it takes a hell of a lot for a mashup to cross over to the mainstream - and this one has. it's being played on radio stations across the states now, including the alternative radio flagship, wfnx in boston. it's a mashup of boulevard of broken dreams (75% of the source for the song), wonderwall by oasis, a travis song ("writing to reach you"), and eminem's "sing for the moment". it's a mashup that transcends the mashup genre. it sounds great on its own. get it. it's worth it.
so i get a call today from steve at the tavern saying he wants me to come into his bar and dj on friday and saturday nights - HOLLA.
this rules. this place is "college party music" - are you kidding me? like RITUAL?! i can do this with my fucking eyes sown shut and my fingers chopped off. this is awesome.
A.MAZE.ING.
ohhhhhh man. when i saw this song on stereogum, i was shocked at how good it was.
gwen is awesome. this song is AWESOME, depsite the comparison to weezer's 'hash pipe'. she's outdone herself.
"now it's only me . . ."
if usher was british and white this song would be called "confessions." (thanks blender for the joke.)
the new streets album came out when i was going through a tough time in my life. this song hit me pretty hard - when i saw them play live, mike skinner was near tears playing this song, and then, in the only moment of emotional sobriety he had the entire night (and, well, alcoholic sobriety as well, likely) he thanked the audience for listening to him sing. it's a beautiful song. if you can find the version with chris martin of coldplay, it only gets better. we've all been there, these moments he's describing - realizing you can't do anything about the end of a relationship. there is one line specifically, where mike says "and i'm just standin' there; i can't say a word; i've got nothin'; absolutely nothin'." where you can't help but feel for him. this is a weepie in every sense of th word. it's his biggest hit so far, and deservingly so.
(links are still down, when they're up, i'll post the songs)
some would say that neighborhood #1 is better than this song - i love this song with a passion. it sounds like something that chris carrabba dreams of writing in his sleep. the arcade fire's (probably the most hyped band of the last six months) debut full-length album "funeral" is beautiful music. it screams of pain, love, anger, trust, hope, lust, betrayal, and of course, death.
the most exciting moment in music this year starts at 3:39 in this song. suddenly this slow song builds to a climax, where the tempo gets fast and you're thrown into an orgy/frenzy of violin, drums, and bass. it's truly amazing. if for no other reason, get this song for the last minute. if you thought great pop/indie music was dead, you'd be wrong for this reason.
unfortunately, the links are all down since the server that hosts the mp3s is down.
i first heard this back in july and i was blown away by the production, the style, the rhymes, and the samples. i told a bunch of people about it saying this song would blow up at some point, only because fab's style in the song is so tight. (i read the other day that the sample in this song is from the supertramp song 'crime of the century', which is pretty cool, all things considered.)
he's only 25 - he's never been a favorite of mine until now. as far as i'm concerned, he's gonna be the best mainstream rapper in three years. better than kanye, jay, luda, 50, eminem, anyone. he's only getting better, and he's going to be THE best.
merry xmas to all.
hope this year was good and next year will be better.
a toast - 'may you live as long as you want to, and want to as long as you live.'
cheers. i'm off to get high.
again - everyone has this. it's not hard to get.
jigga came back this last year with his (heh) last single. rick rubin's production is second to none - it reflects his great work with the beasties. the hard-pounding guitars work perfectly with jay's voice and monotone sound. it's got a weird cadence like most of jay's stuff, but that's okay. it's a huge, magnificent track. i doubt jay's gone forever, but if he is, this was a great way to go out.
wow.
this looks amazing - the cast is supreme. it's going to be huge. billy fucillo huge.
what makes me really excited is how beautiful the movie looks - it seems gorgeous from this trailer. i'm honestly shocked that they got the style of miller's art so right. this should be tons and tons of fun.
i've worked a ton in the last few days. lots of fun though.
went out on monday to play beer pong (yay old times!) at charles' friends house where drama ensued afterwards (that i cant speak to for reasons that, well, its kind personal and its not me, but you know the OC? yeah, multiply that drama to ten.)
then i had a doctors appt on tuesday for my ear and it's stupid shit. i had a hearing test - despite the fact i've been working in clubs for 3.5 years i have great hearing - above average for my age. then i did most of my shopping - for my sister i got her (she's my twin) gwen's album, lord of the rings return of the king EE, spongebob season 2, and a few other things. i picked my mom up some wine glasses, red auerbach's autobiography (HUGE celts fan that she is), and for my dad an ipod remote, the new u2 album and a u2 coffeetable book. happiness ensues.
anyhow, lots of work the last two days, then i'm off to the cape!
then... the boys (and girls) come down from cornwall and t-dot for new years and we party like rockstars. oh ridiculous shit ahead.
!!! so i think i might have got dj gig playing "college party music" which pretty much ended up with my demo being fun of black eyed peas, ac/dc, and jet, but hey. it's better than playing music i thoroughly dislike for five hours. plus the bar is ultrakewl !!!
i'm not even going to link this. it's toxic.
i mean . . . it's toxic. it's arguably the best pop song in years - it's so fucking exciting. britney coos and sings you to - she's alias in the video - she's sexy, smart, and hot. meanwhile, she's married two guys this year. it's such a contradiction. she grinds on you in the song - never mind the video - she's calling you to come for her, to do her bidding. you know what? every single time, you're going to. can you refuse a woman (except when you're steve the certified sex whacko) when she's calling to you like this?
it's so hot, it's ridiculous. i drop this when i'm djing and every girl loses their shit. it'll never get old.
it's pretty neat - it's interpol, but it's bouncy and fun. i think it's about masturbation, but i'm not sure. or it's about feeling someone up. either way, it's good. interpol went kind of happy - but they're still dark and all joy divisiony. which is good.
so pitchfork's list of the top 50 singles is out.
of their top 50, 15 of them are on my list (well actually 13, but i just chose different singles by the same artists). granted pitchfork is kind of douchebaggy, but still. it's nice to see that i'm not an idiot.
von bondies (49), dizzee rascal (34), j-kwon (31), ur-shur (19), modest mouse (17), and annie (1(!!!!)) on their list were on mine. that means there's still 9 songs in my top 10 that are in their top 50. holla. i'm good.
can you figger em out?
currently bumping: kanye west - the new workout plan
although the lead singer seems to have a penchant for getting his ass beat down by jack white (the newly SINGLE jack white), he's a mean rock and roller. the VBs have a classic rock and roll sound - one that is a punkier white stripes. they're not jet, they're not the darkness - this isn't campy. it's just balls to the wall (to the windows!) rock and roll. he's pleading with you "COME ON COME ON!" asking, begging. it's just awesome.
(here you go, van de water...)
you have lots of spyware, viruses, etc, i guarantee it. everyone does - i certainly did. even if you have norton (which sucks, by the way). but you can protect yourself. how? follow these steps.
1) copy / burn all the files you care about onto another hard drive (if you have one) or onto CD.
2) get a copy of windows xp professional edition, a manufacturer's disc, along with an older copy of windows just in case, and the requisite serial numbers.
3) nuke the drive. boot off the cd, delete your c:, and reformat it.
4) boot into a fresh copy of windows xp.
5) get on the internet, and dont go ANYWHERE but windowsupdate.com. get all the updates.
6) then go to firefox.com and get mozilla firefox.
7) delete all instances of internet explorer on your desktop, replace them with firefox. you won't regret it. it's about 373x better vs spyware/viruses.
8) get spybot search and destroy. let "teatimer" run.
9) get adaware.
now, get the stuff you want. winamp, itunes, whatever. but do that 9 steps first if you want to really wipe and protect your computer. you're still going to get spyware, so run spybot every day, and adaware.
yes, i am a nerd.
week 15 came and went (except for tonight's shellacking of the dolphins by the p-a-t-s) - billy volek threw for 492 yards and lost; drew brees completed only 4 of 6 passes for 85 yards (and was the only charger to throw a pass that day) and won; a long snapper flubbed the snap so a game couldn't go into OT; michael vick once again showed why he's the most exciting player in the nfl; and peyton manning was humbled for a first half of a game. meanwhile the four teams that have played to far of the "super 5" (eagles, SUPERchargers, colts, steelers) won again. i think i might actually play a money line parlay with those five or something (the fifth being my patriots). this is amazing.
good stuff.
onto baseball.
i'm very excited about this matt clement feller. he's gonna benefit from being around schilling and (hopefully) varitek. oh, and from not being around dusty baker and his 150 pitch count limit. i would have liked to have got pavano, but clement has a better upside, plus he's a swing and miss guy. pavano might get destroyed by boston/baltimore and their potent lineups. we'll see.
the RJ deal is pretty incredible. as big as the arod/manny deal was supposed to be last year, you can make an argument that if this does end up being four teams (uglysox/dodgers/snakes/cfys) that this will have the most talent ever dealt at once. rj, penny, green, vazquez, konerko is an assload of quality ballplayers.
i'm also actively working on a baseballmogul 2k5 universe.dat file featuring the 2005 zips projections over at baseballthinkfactory.com. it'll be done when they finish posting all the projections. holla.
currently rocking out to: the kinks - father christmas
so i was unbelievably lucky and privileged to have ended up in leigh montville's book "why not us", about the 2004 red sox. my quote regarding my late aunt made it book. i mean . . . of all the quotes taken, of all of the hundreds of people who had lines on the "win it for" thread, mine was, along with thirty or fourty more. that's an honor to me. big time.
wow. this is one of the better crunk tracks i've heard. we've all heard it by now - this is fantastic.
the best part of the song is from 1:11 to 1:40, when twista goes off for the first time in the song. his voice is the percussion instrument in the song compared to l'il jon's harsh beats. he plays perfectly to the sound. by far the best part.
anyone who hears this song and doesn't like the baseline doesn't get music. it's frankly an entirely overly entertaining and fun song.
here we go, the first add-on track so far. just a reptilian. its a mashup of 'reptilia' and 'jus' a rascal'. -great- stuff.
time to state the obvious:
this song is perfect for the love / reunion / breakup scene of some teenage romantic comedy movie. it's coldplay with an irish accent, which is good in my book. the whole album is terrific (i especially like "how to be dead"), but this is the standout.
a hard-rockin track that shows that taking back sunday isn't going anywhere. the two vocalists are great. the music itself is impressive. more than anything, their album proves that they won't be confined to the pop-punk genre, much like brand new (and i wrote about their conflict a while back). i think this is good. rock and roll is in so much trouble now, and its bands like these who are the younger part of a (hopefully) new rock and roll revolution.
i can dream, can't i?
here is 20 things you don't know about me.

currently listening to: partyben - boulevard of broken songs mashup
so today i went to my mom's house on cape cod with my sister. after a lovely dinner we watched daily show. and we laughed a lot at billy connelly talking about slapping his dick against the side of a urinal - and then... south park.
okay, i'm a big south park fan. but this episode was absolutely ridiculous. it was the story of cute forest animals trying to birth their lord and savior - who just so happens to be the anti-christ.
i'm not going to go into specifics, but the line "YAY! BLOOD ORGY!" was said.
thanks to P&G for the link (specifically 941827).
go fred durst.
a song about complacency and laziness.
say what you will about death cab, but they certainly are good at what they do (some would say the best).
nothing like the goth-showtune genre.
well it hasn't been made 100% official yet, but it looks like pedro's gone. which is sad. i was lucky enough to be a sox fan living in boston for his best years - i still remember the day that they traded for him and i remember the globe's sports section that day. it was so exciting.
a few pedro memories:
pedro, you'll be missed. good luck.
one of the more interesting videos for a band that has been around forever, and they finally broke through with two singles (the other being "ocean breathes salty"). very fun music, no doubt.
The best thing about this band is that it sounds just like the Strokes. That's pretty good. It's a bouncy, Strokes-eque beat that every hipster should be proud of. They're Brits, from what I understand. Don't really know what to say, except you'll enjoy it.
the first epic track off the american idiot album is only the second best. that said - it's truly an amazing track, drawing chords and structure from "all the young dudes", "ring of fire", and (i think) "summer of '69", but i could be wrong on that last one. the five-part song introduces "jesus of suburbia", the protagonist in the green day punk rock opera. its a long fuckin' song, so it's gonna take a while to download. but enjoy it. it's well worth the wait.
i got opening day tickets today thanks to jeremy redburn, my new hero.
i get to see in person, the red sox raise the world series banner.
oh god.
(no link for now, i'm at work.)
the "we-will-rock-you" beat, the hard stomping, the jackass lyrics. its strange when a 17 year old makes a clubbanger about drinking. this was one of the biggest club songs this year, no questions. its got a horribly lame video, but whatever. its a catchy song.
a story about it - charles was in france for a while, and one night while out at a bar, heard this song and couldn't believe what he was hearing. he then started asking his friends back home about it demanding to know what this was! to this day, whenever he hears this song he flips out. loves it.
tonight i got stupid!
i decided (after the internet crashed like a hobo after a speed binge) to get high. not just high but very high. high like an eagle, if i can borrow a term from the eagles, so to speak.
i worked tonight, thereby missing the hit fox television show, 'the orange county'. my vcd did not record it as i thought it would, so i am forced to download it. i doubt it will be done by 3 am, so i'm shit out of luck on seeing it tonight.
speaking of seeing things, i saw blade: trinity last night with char-lays. we laughed way too much. ryan reynolds is the only good reason to see the movie (outside of jessica biel). the movie was a 2 hour ad for ipods, which, while i appreciate since i damn near worship mine, got kind of funny when there were specific slow-motion scenes of biel putting in her ear buds. notice i said scenes. as in, three or four. but ryan reynolds was hilarious. so hilarious that we determined that his lines were primarily adlibbed, since the rest of the script was dreck. dreck i tell you! i dont know if a movie trilogy has been made popular because of a singular scene (ie the rave/fight scene that started blade 1), but you just keep hoping that it gets better as the movie goes along. that said, it was damn fun to watch. stupid as hell, but after all the mindtwisting movies i've seen in the last five years, its fun to see movies that dont make you think. except about ipods. mm. ipod. the movie was also shot in toronto and vancouver. i found that seeing buildings with the bmo and td bank logos kind of strange. and the CN tower in another scene. whoops.
so i've noticed recently that all my favorite shows are on fox. the simpsons, 24, the oc, and arrested development. it kind of weirds me out like that, but it's hard to find good tv elsewhere that doesnt involved the words "red", "sox", or "new" "england" "patriots" these days.
looks like petey's resigning. which is good, according to BDD, its 3/40.
more later, i'm sure.
so mike skinner does something that isn't done well, or often enough - he makes a concept album work. we follow him through his life as he loses his dvds, a thousand quid, his mind (in this song), his girl, and his friends. but he learns in the end that life isn't shit (see the song 'empty cans')
i remember the first time i listened to this song, and i mean really listened, i had my headphones on and was laying down. the song has such incredibly powerful music in it that its hard to fathom. if you can understand it - the song actually makes you feel high, which is entirely what it is about. it's got this feeling we've all had to it - being in a club and trying to get somewhere to meet friends/ lovers/random people, and not being able to get through the crowd crush or be able to find them at all. it's really an interesting bit he does.
mike skinner is, in my opinion, one of the five best songwriters in the world today. original pirate material is one of the best albums i've ever heard, and this one is up there as well. the opening song off OPM, "turn the page", is quite possibly one of the best openers for any album . . . ever.
the highlight, in my opinion of one of the best albums to hit in years. harsh beats, harsh vocals, and very haunting backups make it a terrific track altogether. he's definetly coming up, and his followup "showtime" is possibly -better- than boy in da corner.
we all have our guilty pleasures. some of us like britney and xtina and dont tell anyone. or maybe you are a bit of a toby keith or tim mcgraw fan (who by the way, was great in friday night lights).
me? i really like good charlotte. yes, every song sounds the same. their new single "i just wanna live" almost has an n.e.r.d. feeling to it (complete with falsetto crooning that is VERY pharell-esque, and considering benji and joel were both on the recent n.e.r.d. album, there's a chance that he actually does croon there.) the first single absolutely sucked, but this one . . . it's just catchy. it's not good. don't get me wrong, but it's mindless and for that, i thank them.
it's the all-stars of underground hip-hop! all we need is del and eyedea and we'd be doing a "do they know its christmas after all" of underground hip-hop. it's got a nice beat, and it's tight stuff. i love atmosphere and sage francis, so dig this song big-time. they're all such great lyricists that it's hard not to appreciate how it flows.
jesus fucking christ. canada, i'm sorry there are people this stupid in america, and they get broadcast all over the world. i am so very sorry. ann coulter and tucker carlson each just... they just don't get it.
a sick beat, a country song in disguise, and a nova scotian make the #26 song. buck 65 obviously has a love for dr. dre and a love for hank williams, and shows it on his country-fried-hip-hop track about his little road trip.
this is the 'official' blog for the video i made.
while i'm tempted to put this higher up on the list, i think this is a safe spot. it's a great album, hot fuss, and i'm enjoying it, but i think this song was a little overrated. it's got a great paranoid feel to it, and a truly fantastic video, but i just don't trust mormon lead singers.
i work with this one yankee fan, aaron. he's from long island, and is a yankee fan true. we always talk baseball, and he's the kind of guy who hates giambi and a-rod because they're not "true yankees" and is excited at the idea of getting back mike stanton, alfonso soriano, and tino martinez. he knows his shit about the game. he went to game 7 and was one of the guys trying to rally the bleacher creatures into some sort of action.
but the amazing thing is that if i even MENTION roberts' stolen base in game 4 or anything after that, he just goes, "i can't talk about it. i get depressed." finally, he knows how we feel. :)
1) i picked up the stewart o'nan / stephen king book (i think i said that) about the sox. it's really enjoyable, albeit kind of just like reading game threads on sosh except with less pictures of fireworks, homer simpson, and exclamation points. nevertheless, it's fun to read and i'm already at the brawl game.
2) i think i served a coked-up porn star tonight. i know she was coked-up, but i don't know if she was a porn star. her chest was big enough to put a dinner placesetting on though.
3) the best quote from the espn.com story on denny neagle getting picked up for solicting a hooker: "Davis said the woman, Jill Russell, 40, of Denver was issued a citation on a charge of prostitution. Her phone number wasn't available." i guess that the ap wanted a blow job too or something. oh, and "He is set to make $10 million next year, with a $9 million buyout." who the HELL does dan o'dowd think he is giving a guy a NINE MILLION DOLLAR BUYOUT??! that's RIDICULOUS!!
if there's anything these welsh scream-pop-rock stalwarts have mastered its huge catchy choruses and guitar riffs. i dont know what to say about this song, really, except when i've seen it live (well, live on tv) it's :really: good.
okay, nothing like an all-gay group doing an electronic disco cover of pink floyd. it's nothing you've ever heard and everything you ever loved. they channel queen, moby, elton john, kylie minogue and take the stoner anthem and make it danceable. good stuff. the entire album is really superb, but this track made waves in the new york underground club scene at the beginning of the year and really broke through in the mainstream (well, as mainstream as it got) around june/july.
if you read this and you don't get a little teary, then you have no heart. it's that simple.
thanks a ton lawtownfool for the link.
so i got up today in search of the sports illustrated "sportsmen of the year" issue that features the Red Sox and RSN as the winners. i went to five places today. i couldn't find it, but i did find stephen king and stewart o'nan's book "faithful" which chronicles the season start to finish. i'm excited to read it, but to be fair, at this point i would read a book about derek lowe's obvious neurosis because it involved this year's team.
in fact, i would suggest all of you (well those of you who like the sox that is) go and check out keys to the game by jose melendez - some of the best day-to-day humor you will find about the red sox, or really, about anything. it's hilarious stuff, to the point where every game i eagerly awaited his KEYS TO THE GAME arriving on the daily game thread on sosh. if you like humor and baseball it's worth your time.
"The Yankees are said to be exploring a standard clause that allows a contract to be voided if a player does not keep himself in playing condition. Jose’s opinion is that the Yankees should save themselves the legal bills and just wait it out. By all indications, Giambi was also taking Clomid, a female fertility drug, so when he gets pregnant and goes on maternity leave, they won’t have to pay him anyway." fantastic stuff. i love it.
one of the central figures in this whole steroid thing is a guy named greg anderson.
doesn't he just look like a douchebag?
any suggestions on a car to buy? i'm getting roughly 16k for my wreck, so i've got a lot of options. thoughts?
since some people don't get the idea that this is an mp3 blog primarily, i'll say it again: THIS BLOG IS ABOUT MUSIC PRIMARILY. THATS WHY I WRITE ABOUT MUSIC.
ahem.
a nice power-punk-rock ditty about being in love with a girl when she loves someone else. it's a great track - it's fast, it's smart, and it's got a great music video.
"another line without a hook; i held you close and we both shook; for the last time, TAKE A GOOD HARD LOOK".
well that was a great episode of the oc.
i think it was possibly my favorite one they've done outside of the Chrismukkah one. i dug it. lots of unintentional comedy, lots of great little parts. they even got U2 to play their newest lovesong/weepie at a part when everyone was all cute and cozy. the premise of the killers playing in a bar that non-packed and that small made me laugh (i mean, i saw hot hot heat play and they didnt have a super-popular music video and THEY had more people and there was more of a crowd crush).
that aside - good stuff.
i had a job interview today with tim cook, to edit wedding videos on a freelance basis, essentially $300 a job, and a bump up to $400 after 3-4 jobs. not bad. i'll know next wednesday.
i also hate kara's car. the battery died while i was driving it, so i basically was driving without headlights at 5 PM on the highway, which is frightening. i had to leave my job interview to let the AAA guy into the car - but it was okay. i think i have a good shot.
i also should be djing again soon. i think i'm in luck there, with sissy k's again, or possibly the new bar the owner of sissy k's is opening.
one of the most underrated albums of 2003 was brand new's breakthrough album deja entendu, moving them past being a "pop punk" group and into the more serious "melodic punk" genre. they were no longer the whiny, bitching-about-girls group that they had shown on your favorite weapon, transforming into a group that really pushed their artistic and lyrical abilities.
while the album has eight amazing tracks or so, the best was their second single, "sic transit gloria... glory fades". the bassline creates tension throughout the song, making the listener feel uncomfortable. it's got this really interesting composition of sounds that you don't hear much - there isn't a lot of bands that sound like they do. jesse malin's vocals really hit hard at you, despite the sometimes, uh, creative lyrical content.
