three gut records bands are awesome

what a truly terrific label three gut records is. they've only got a few bands on it, but just look at who they have signed! the constantines, cuff the duke, gentleman reg, jim guthrie, oneida, royal city, and sea snakes! there's like five bands in there that i really love!

anyhow.

cuff the duke are from canada, and they're a queen's university favorite, having played roughly seventy-eight times in the last year. more than that, they make incredibly country-tinged rock and roll that really makes me a happy fella. i remember i teched their show a few years ago and was absolutely floored by their sound. i think the lead singer was actually sick and still managed to stun the audience with his ability to carry a band like he is. that's not a slight on the band, mind you, they're terrific, but the singer, wayne petti, is so charismatic on stage it's fantastic.

anyhow, while they don't have any tracks off their new album on their site, three wonderful songs:

cuff the duke - ballad of a lonely construction worker: a somber yet inspiring song, if that makes sense. it should when you listen.

cuff the duke - the difference between us
: a bit more upbeat than 'ballad', but still a somber song. i think the 'somber' stuff comes from the country side of things that they incorporate into their music. i also think i've used 'somber' more times in this post than i have in the rest of the history of this site.

cuff the duke - blackheart: tremendous. absolutely tremendous.

gentleman reg's beautiful vocals and interesting lyrics make for a wonderful combination on the track 'it's not safe', off the new album 'darby & joan'. an artist who has played with broken social scene and draws favorable comparisons to bss always makes me a satisfied fella. check out the track.
