#40: Rhymefest - Fever

So, here we go. It's a long 41 days (2nd-to-last day, is of course, the "other lists" day), and I've got at least 80 songs prepared for this whole ordeal - every day you'll get the listed song, plus at least one more song by that artist, usually a remix, a mashup, or something like that (unless, it's a really popular song that I would get in trouble for having up. In that case, expect . There's no better time to get started than the present, so let's dictate the mic like Fidel does his nation.

Our first entry comes from the magnificent Rhymefest, who's the genius behind my #1 song of 2004, with his song "Fever" off the Blue Collar album, a massively underrated album. Anytime you have a posthumous Ol' Dirty Bastard singing the hook of a song sampling "Build Me Up Buttercup", you've got a monster on your hands.

Fever's sample comes from the obvious Peggy Lee classic "You Give Me Fever", and it's used perfectly - the hook, not sung by Rhymefest, is fantastic. However, the real good shit is in Rhymefest's lyrical ability (he's one of the most respected battle MCs alive - there's a story about him coming directly from work as a janitor to a battle and ended up winning despite being made fun of for being, in fact, a janitor). The song peaks near the end when he rips this:

"You can never be hot as me, you can't even afford a coat
I got that FE-VER ha-ha-ha-hot as hellfire, brimstone
Stiletto brim hats, bitches with gems on
Niggaz with Timbs on, Jenny Jones to Jim Jones
I get the d-down like syndrome
I get r-round like rims on, the ghetto King Kong that sing songs
and made a billion dollars on ringtones!"

He's just fucking smart.
